Eternal Life
Written by Jeff Buckley
Eternal Life is now on my trail
Got my red glitter coffin, man, just need one last nail
While all these ugly gentlemen play out their foolish games
there's a flaming red horizon that screams our names
And as your fantasies are broken in two
Did you really think this bloody road
would pave the way for you?
You better turn around
and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel

Racist everyman, what have you done?
Man, you've made a killer of your unborn son...
Crown my fear your king at the point of a gun
All I want to do is love everyone...

And as your fantasies are broken in two
did you really think this bloody road
would pave the way for you?
You better turn around
and blow your kiss hello to life eternal

There's no time for hatred, only questions
Where is love, where is happiness, what is Life,
where is peace?

When will I find the strength to bring me release?
And tell me where is the love in what your prophet has said?
Man, It sounds to me just like a prison for the walking dead
And I've got a message for you and your twisted hell
You better turn around and blow your kiss goodbye
to life eternal angel...
'This is a song that before I jump to my jumbo coffee... That is called Eternal Life and uh.. [sips] ah, uh. I wrote on a couch somewhere in Los Angeles, and it's just about how there is so many things to learn about being a human being on earth that there's no use with messing with each other, oppressing one another or messing with people's life from a desk somewhere.' -- Jeff Buckley (WFMU, New Jersey, USA, 1992-11-10)

'Jeff sat there on the couch at my Los Angeles apartment and wrote an entire song, it was amazing' -- Kathrine Grimm (Everybody Here Wants You Documentary) (Katherine was in the band Group Therapy with Jeff before his move to New York)

'This is a song about republicans, about religious fanatics, and morons who cut school lunches, and governmental vacations to Cabo San Lucas, where they 'plook' their secretaries. This world doesn't belong to them. It belongs to lovers who sing their souls. It belongs to people who make love with no shame, who love their bodies. The bodies of women, the bodies of men, the bodies of hope. Anything else is death!' -- Jeff Buckley (Back Door, San Diego, USA 1995-05-01)

'Lots of people like to be kissed all over the neck. And then be fucked like an animal from behind! We all have our knight-in-shining-armour fantasy, and we have our classroom-rape fantasy, and they go together... and you can come here and experience it all vicariously through my show.' -- Jeff Buckley (Palais Theatre, Melbourne, Australia, 1996-02-28)

'What I want to say with a song like 'Eternal Life' is: If you're one of those people who thinks he has to spend energy in putting down and discriminating others or passing on racist ideas to children or playing games with everyone, just to cover up your own lack of self-respect, then you're lost forever. There are so many other goals in life. There is so much to learn about life itself. Why waste your time with all that bullshit? Try to see people as people and don't fixate on the color of their skin, status or sexual preference. I get very upset about that because I see it as one of the biggest threats nowadays. There is a giant desintegration going on, but that offers unknown possibilities of growth as well. From the ashes of chaos, you can 'arise' bigger and stronger.
All that talk about the independent music-scene and the so-called Generation X is a symptom of the confusion. Everything is being labelled, but nobody knows what it means. There is fear of the unknown and that's the reason for labelling everything. Even I don't know what Generation X means, but to me it could mean: get out or get de-x-ed. ' -- Jeff Buckley (Bertvan der Kamp, OOR, Holland, August 1994)
