Fan anecdote from a french website:
“Jeff … Jeff died just after the release of my second album, Megiddo. The copy I had sent him it probably still in his mailbox. It was a few days before my twentieth birthday.

Jeff inspired me so much, he was so encouraging … I do not know if other albums would have come if I had not met him. You’re right, I met Jeff for the first time at Birchmere in Northern Virginia. I was 16. He was the opening act for Dave Matthews. I had never heard of Jeff before; his first album, Live at Sin-é had just come out and Jeff turned on himself. I went backstage after the opening concert of Jeff to find Dave (Dave was in the same city as me, and my father was his manager at the time), and Jeff was sitting alone at a piano. So we started talking and we discussed throughout Dave’s concert.

Jeff was like nobody else, in truth, generous, passionate and of course beautiful, both inside and out. He also had a fun and silly side, a facet of his character that you may be hard to understand because of his music and his image, but it made me laugh constantly. I fell in love.

I did not see him often, only when I was in New York or if he had run in Virginia, but we remained friends.

I watched how his rock star life style seemed to take a toll on HIM. He lost a lot of weight and began to smoke cigarettes. The gleam in those eyes had darkened, he seemed more often sad, angry and bitter. But he always had time for his friends, he encouraged and supported me. He loved music, he really listened, and was humble. It does not take a star.

He took more care of his friends than himself. I don’t even know if one day I’d leave there will be someone to look after him.

Well obviously he was not a perfect angel, he was human. It was not easy to be his friend when he was busy. But when I look back I remember how it was extraordinary, and I know I’ve been very lucky to know him.

It’s a hard life as a singer. I started touring and recording when I was very young, 16 years. At the moment I take a step back in this life there and I try to recover a little that I lost when I decided to pursue a career in music instead of going to school .. I know that sooner or later I would come back to music, I really miss him terribly. I love touring in France so I really hope to return someday.

Music is very important in my life, it inspires me so much. See Jeff live solo was probably one of my biggest inspirations, but others have also inspired me: Radiohead, Björk, PJ Harvey, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, Sinead O'Connor and Marilyn Manson.
I like the gothic, industrial music, new wave 80s, indie, electronic music, instrumental, classical, jazz … I think the biggest influence of Jeff is felt on songs like "Persephone,” “Build A Home”, “The Addict” and “Song For A Boy”.

One day I have a solo acoustic concert and a woman told me that I was a cross between Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley. For me it was the best compliment that one I had never done. “
